Located in the heart of the Avondale community, two existing buildings provide a terrific opportunity to transform traditional Chicago-style apartment living. Instead of leaving the entry off of the busy avenue out front, pedestrians are invited to walk through a dynamic new passage between the two buildings to a new rear courtyard that unifies the two, previously disconnected buildings. This courtyard re-introduces the sense of community and belonging within a larger context of neighbors.
Entry points into both buildings are provided off of this courtyard. The facades of the two courtyard-facing buildings help break down the scale while creating a softer texture through the use of wood, metal, and brick. The connection through the alley is wrapped with wood cladding that provides privacy for the residents while drawing pedestrians through the alley to the courtyard beyond.
