Bronzeville, Chicago

This stretch of 51st Street in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago was formerly a vibrant stretch of commercial and business activity. Over the decades, with much disinvestment, many buildings have become vacant, with even more being torn down. This trend has left the community with a compromised urban fabric.

However, where there is adversity, there is also opportunity. The vision behind this project is to take another step in reversing this trend. Bringing back active storefronts along 51st Street, as well as providing desirable residential units above the ground floor, will create a destination for individuals within the community. The design inspiration directly responds to the culture surrounding it. The existing building, as well as the new addition, will be washed in various shades of black, creating an iconic destination within the surrounding context.
